Divine Light
One of dozens of narrow, deep canyons scattered around the Colorado
Plateau, this slot canyon in northern Arizona is re-carved each time a flash
flood rushes through. Although the entire scene is filled with sand and
dust, only a shaft is illuminated by direct sunlight from a narrow opening
hundreds of feet above. This shaft touches the floor only around solar noon
for just a few minutes a day near the summer solstice. |
