The deserts of the southwestern United States present many of the world's truly spectacular landforms. It is in this region that the naked earth displays shapes and colors found in few localities. Carved by water and wind and colored by minerals and sunlight, the scenes represented below are dramatically enhanced by the deep azure blue of a clear sky or the textured and often multicolored clouds.
